ABOUT THE SKILLS GAP



The concept for the Hotel Career Expo emerged from two pieces of research: 

First, the Deloitte Access Australian Tourism Labour Force Report (2015) forecast that by 2020 there will be demand for a further 123,000 skilled and unskilled workers in the sector nationally, with skilled workers representing approximately half of that figure.

Then in September 2015, Tourism Accommodation Australia (TAA) undertook a Labour Trends in Accommodation Survey amongst its NSW members. The results demonstrated that skills shortages were very high for a range of managerial and supervisory positions.

The biggest factors contributing to skills shortages:

1 | Limited applicants with sufficient skills and experience
2 | Limited applicants with required education/training
3 | Competition from employers in other industries

This highlighted the need to address constraints with education and training and highlight the inspiring and rewarding professional career paths available to encourage people to enter and stay in the industry.

The Deloitte report identified eight national hotspots with high levels of tourism and hospitality shortages, one of which was Sydney. As a result, a Sydney Tourism Employment Plan (TEP) was developed in conjunction with an Industry Advisory Group.

One of the recommendations emerging from the Sydney TEP was the development of an Industry Careers Day and marketing campaign to lift the profile of the industry and attract long term recruits who see the industry as an aspirational career, hence the development of the:

HOTEL CAREER EXPO.

ABOUT THE 2016 HOTEL CAREER EXPO

The inaugural Hotel Career Expo was held in Sydney in May 2016, and over 1,000 ambitious and talented young job seekers were inspired to attend and take the first step in pursuing a rewarding professional career in the hotel industry. Attendees were able to meet potential future employers and gain advice about how to climb the hotel career ladder, not just from managers but also from young and successful individuals, currently working in the industry.

Major hotel names including Accor, Shangri-La and Marriott put their normally competitive streaks aside, to join together to shine a light on the many and diverse professional careers available – from events and marketing, to engineering and finance in the hotel industry.

“We were very excited to be able to provide such an event to young people, who want a head start in the industry. All the top hotels and industry leaders have thrown their weight behind this initiative and only by working together have we been able to achieve such a great result.” Carol Giuseppi, CEO of TAA

The Hostplus Education Zone featured seminars covering a range of topics designed to answer questions about the hotel industry and six Career Booths gave attendees the opportunity to access relevant information and an opportunity to speak to decision makers in relation to specific career paths.

We also gave away stays in luxury hotels including QT Sydney, Park Hyatt, InterContinental, Four Seasons, Meriton Serviced Apartments, Hilton Sydney and Crown Metropol Melbourne to seven lucky winners in “Explore, Collect & Win”.

And all eligible Expo attendees were  invited to apply for one of three scholarships valued at over $10,000, offered by Sydney TAFE, with the winners given the opportunity to complete the acclaimed Diploma of Hospitality Management (SIT50416).

In 2017/18 we will be building on the solid foundations set during the 2016 campaign to continue to change perceptions of the hotel industry as an aspirational career choice and engage the professional superstars who will contribute to the future growth of the industry.
